To transform a rare flower into bulk product, the Dutchmen did’nt hesitate to industrialize its culture. Visit of the European leader, close to Amsterdam, where 30 million orchids use to be born each year . The country of the tulip passes to the orchis. Kings of the horticulture, the Dutchmen deployed all their know-how to manufacture the orchis in great series. Result: a flourishing business. An incredible boom. With a sales turnover which increased by 35% in 2004, to reach 180 million euros, the Dutch orchis already monopolize the quarter of the flowers’s sales of the kingdom. Now, if anybody can find it everywhere in Europe, it is thanks to Kees Schone, young employer of the family company Floricultura. Its taste of the experimentation and its sense of the trade transformed a luxury flower into a bulk product.

EBOLA, THE BATS’S TRACK !
Has the reservoir for the killer virus finally been identified?

In the last thirty years, scientists all over the world have been tracking the reservoir for one of the most dangerous viruses man has ever faced: the Ebola virus, first identified in September 1976 in Yambuku ,Zaire (actual Democratic Republic of Congo) close to a river which gave its name to the disease. Within 2 months, an unknown hemorrhagic fever contaminated 318 people, among which only 38 survived .
Since 1976, the disease reappeared 14 times in Central Africa, each time in a very sudden way, as if it bursted out of the rainforest. It lasts for a few weeks, killing up to 90% of the patients, and disappears as suddenly as it appeared. Recently, Eric Leroy and an international team of researchers from the IRD and the International Center for Medical Research of Franceville (Gabon) have shown that the great apes, which are also victims of the disease, were an essential link in the transmission to humans: hunters are contaminated by handling the carcasses of the chimpanzees or gorillas they killed; then they transmit the disease to their relatives and neighbours.

Christophe Lepetit, photographer and veterinarian, specialized in scientifical features, has followed the scientists crew in Gabon’s rainforests during their last bat capture trip and in their laboratories in Franceville. The aim of this last mission carried out by Xavier Pourrut (IRD/CIRMF) was to continue the work of the precedent ones in order to evaluate the risk of a direct contamination from fruit-bats to man and to study the circulation of the virus in the bats’s population.

EBOLA, LA PISTE DE LA CHAUVE SOURIS! Le réservoir du virus tueur enfin identifié?

Depuis trente ans, les scientifiques du monde entier sont sur la piste du réservoir de l’un des virus les plus dangereux que l’homme ait jamais connu: le virus Ebola, identifié pour la première fois en septembre 1976 à Yambuku en République Démocratique du Congo (ex Zaïre) près d’une rivière qui a donné son nom à la maladie. En 2 mois, 318 personnes furent atteintes par une fièvre hémorragique inconnue jusqu’alors et parmi elles seules 38 survécurent.
Depuis, à 14 reprises, la maladie s’est abattue soudainement sur la même zone d’ Afrique Centrale, semblant surgir de la forêt équatoriale. Elle sévit pendant quelques semaines, allant jusqu’à tuer 90% des malades, et disparaît aussi subitement qu’elle était apparue. Récemment Eric Leroy et une équipe internationale de chercheurs de l’IRD et du Centre International de Recherche Médicale de Franceville (CIRMF) au Gabon ont montré que les grands primates victimes eux aussi de la maladie était un élément essentiel de la transmission à l’homme: des chasseurs se contaminaient en manipulant une carcasse de gorille ou de chimpanzé tué à la chasse et transmettaient la maladie à leurs proches.
