Train to tibet: 48 hours journey to Lhasaland.
Since the opening of the line between Beijing and Lhasa, the 1st July 2006, there was an influx of tourists and long-term migrants who threaten Tibet’s cultural integrity. Tibetan faith has been turned to “Lhasaland” to promote the tourism in Tibet and to attract new chinese migrants from all over China. Tibetans are worried. They will lose even more importance in their own homeland . The Buddhist religion and Tibetan culture will be endangered as the risk of ethnic tension rises. The Dalai Lama talks about the “the second demographic invasion”.
Beijing-Lhasa: construction of the highest train in the world.
A train to Tibet ! The chinese people made it and claimed it : the highest altitude railroad in the world. For the last five years, 35 000 workers have laid down track in bitter cold and at high altitude over the 1 142 kms between Golmud and Lhasa. Almost the entire route lies over 4,000 meters (13,100 feet) high - at its highest point, the Tangula Pass, it is 5,072 meters (16,640 feet) above sea level. 34 train stations, 11 tunnels, 2 647 bridges were completed for the opening date, the 1st July 2006. The project cost 33 billion yuan (approximately ?3.46 billion).
Communist Party leader, Hu Jintao, called the railway a “miracle” of railway engineering. But the railway has drawn criticism from advocates of Tibetan autonomy who say the trains will bring an influx of tourists and long-term migrants who threaten Tibet’s cultural integrity. The Chinese already plan to extend the line beyond Lhasa. By 2017 two more stretches will be added: to Linzhi in the East and to the second-largest Tibetan city, Xigatse.
