The repeated damage at one of the world’s most important archaeological sites is proving an embarrassment for Italy, and giving credence to accusations that the entire ancient city is in a state of decay. A few weeks ago,on novembre 6, Italy was embarrassed when a frescoed house, the Schola Armaturarum, where gladiators prepared for combat, was reduced to a pile of stones and dust in seconds. (Less than a year ago, another building, the House of the Chaste Lovers, collapsed in Pompeii) Three weeks later a stretch of garden wall ringing an ancient house in gave way after days of torrential rain. Two days after two ancient walls fell down , making four collapses in less than a month !
The collapses made world headlines and triggered criticism of sharp budget cuts and charges of neglect of Italy’s vast archaeological heritage.
