Ecuador: « Jungle Law » : A story by photographer Rémi Bénali

In 1993, thirty thousand Amerindians and farmers launched into a titanic judicial battle against Chevron Texaco, the second largest producer of energy in the world. The people of the Sucumbios region in Ecuador, who call themselves Los Afectados or the « Affected Ones », are determined to fight for as long as it takes. Lead by their lawyer, Pablo Fajardo, a man who also comes from extreme poverty, the plaintiffs ask more than 6 billion Dollars in compensation for the damages. It is one of the largest suits ever of its kind.

Hijra, « half-women » of Pakistan

Hijra cultivate the secret and the ambiguity which characterize them. They claim to be pseudo-hermaphrodites, victims of the curse of God but most are eunuches. In Delhi, in the elegant and trendy shops of Connaught place, they threaten to undress if they don’t obtain charities. To Lahore or other sanctuary of Pakistani Punjab, they dance lasciviously in rustic « discos » to attract clients. On both sides of the indo-Pakistani border, they are Hijra or Khusra walking in the streets, in noisy groups, dressed in saris or in shalwar kamiz (ample tunic on a baggy pants). They are welcomed everywhere with a mixture of superstitious fear, contempt, amusement, and sometimes respect.

Chronicle of a cancer – The victory of Gregory

The battle against cancer is a real ordeal. On top of having to fight against the spread of tumours, the patient has to endure traumatizing treatments both mentally and physically. Grégory, 26 years old, was confronted to this ordeal. This report allowed me to show how Grégory, by making the most of the best in him and around him: his craving to live, the love of his relatives and the profound humanity of the nurses, was, with the doctors, one of the authors of his own recovery.

River Dolphins in danger !

The definite extinction of the Baiji, or Chinese dolphin, is not only the first ever for a cetacean but could likely be followed by others. River dolphins are amongst the most endangered mammals in the world because they live right where humans are most active for fishing but also industry and transport, hence pollution. Hunting is usually not a major threat as these animals are often linked to religious beliefs. But this does not save them from being accidentally trapped in nets or starved by lack of fish. Portraits of these original creatures (some are almost blind, have crocodile rostrums, spit water, or bear hairs?) which live in the largest rivers of the planet.
