Procession de la Sanch, the Good Friday procession in Perpignan
South of France. Every Good Friday, « penitents » dressed in black or in red file out of the church Saint-Jacques de Perpignan and cross the city over several hours. Created originally in 1416, this procession of brothers had the mission of accompanying the condemned to their execution. Today, this procession celebrates more the Passion of Christ and remains one of the most moving, spectacular events in Roussillon, in which the sacred and the profane are very close.

Le Tchad est confrontée depuis 2003 à une rebellion venue du Soudan voisin et de sa province du Darfour. L’armée régulière tchadienne est appuyée par des troupes rebelles (les Toro-Boro) opposées au régime de Khartoum. Ils se battent contre une guérilla armée par le Soudan (les janjawids) qui mène de fréquentes et violentes incursions sur le territoire tchadien.

Chad is confronted since 2003 with a rebellion come from Sudan and its province of Darfur. The Chadian regular army is supported by rebel troops (Toro-Boro) in war with Khartoum government. They fight against a guerrilla armed by Sudan (janjawids) which carries out the frequent ones and force incursions on the Chadian territory.

A l’aide de technologies inédites, des scientifiques passent au peigne fin les temples khmers. Pour percer les secrets d’une capitale jadis florissante. Le dense forêt cambodgienne s’étend en toile de fond. Au premier plan, les majestueux visages taillés dans la pierre du temple Bayon, à Angkor, contemplent l’horizon. Les ancestrales divinités khmères restent impassibles, pourtant un spectacle insolite se déroulent sous leur yeux. A une vingtaine de mètres du sol, un ovni projette sur le monument un rayon laser rouge. Au sol, le Pr. Katsushi Ikeuchi et son équipe du laboratoire Computer Vision, de l’université de Tokyo, recueillent les données transmises par le dispositif. Leur objectif : scanner l’édifice et faire parler les pierres. Elles livreront peut-être une partie des secrets d’Angkor, l’immense cité qui, jusqu’à il y a près de huit cents ans, s’étendait ici, bien au-delà les temples aujourd’hui photographiés par les touristes.
Aux techniques archéologiques classiques, s’ajoutent désormais le laser multidirectionnel, le spectromètre et autres détections par image satellitaire. L’équipe japonaise pilote un grand ballon gonflé à l’hélium comme un cerf-volant géant. Celui-ci porte le dispositif de mesure par laser à longue fréquence. Lentement, il scanne lentement les statues colossales dans leurs moindres détails. Les données recueillies ces cinq dernières années ont déjà permis au Pr Ikeuchi de réaliser une reproduction virtuelle numérique en trois dimensions du temple Bayon dans son intégralité. Avec une précision millimétrique. En cas d’effondrement de Bayon, les archéologues pourraient le reconstruire à l’identique. L’impact des balles – vestige des guerres – comprises ! …

Since 17 years the French TGV holds the world record with 515 km/h. The articulated duplex trainset will complete a trial reach between 553 km/h! En à peine 15 ans, la capitale du Karnataka, au sud de l’Inde, est devenue la première cité IT (Information Technology) du monde. Comme le fait remarquer le site officiel de la ville, « toutes les autoroutes de l’information mènent à Bangalore ». Les plus grosses entreprises technologiques y ont élu domicile et la Silicon Valley californienne sous-traite ici une grande partie de ses activités de développement et la quasi-totalité du back-office. Que vous appeliez la hot-line de General Electric ou celle d’IBM, il y a de fortes chances qu’au bout du fil, on vous réponde avec un accent indien !

Within 15 years, the capital of Karnataka, south of India, has become the first IT City in the world. As said in the official website of the city: « all the information routes lead to Bangalore ». The biggest hi-tech companies have settle there and the Californian Silicon Valley outsources in Bangalore most of its software development and back-office. Should you call G.E. or IBM hotlines, you’ll probably be answered with an Indian accent!

Abu Camp – safari with the Elephant Master
A trip to the other side of the world, an encounter with wild animals? while traveling on elephant back. Somewhere in the middle of the winding waterways of the Okavango Delta, is Randall Moore, an American who could be straight from the pages of fiction, who has devoted his life to the elephants of Africa, and is offering visitors a truly amazing experience.
In the Okavango Delta, sunrise seems primeval, as if it were the very beginning of the world. One by one, the different species stir after a night of sleep or hunting, always in the same order, and making so much noise. The insects are the first to dance, with a deafening screech; then flamboyant birds join in and greet the sun, followed by the big cats, growling as they emerge from their slumber.
Seen from a « bird’s eye » position on top of an elephant, this agitation is reduced to a miniature scale. Up high, rocking back and forth in silence, we were following a leopard busy marking out its territory after a downpour; and what luck, for leopards usually do their wandering at night.

Bird Flu is back (again)

In mid-December 2005, the H5N1 virus caused the death of 11 people in a five-week period. 73 humans and millions of fowl livestock were affected by the virus, while 30 million livestock breeders are facing bankruptcy, mainly In China, Vietnam and Indonesia. Within the confines of a sterile laboratory, doctors and virus specialists are becoming increasingly alarmed. Will the cunning H5N1 mutate? When? How? And there is good reason to worry?
