La saga du savon de Marseille

La recette du véritable savon de Marseille n’a guère changé depuis des décennies ni le matériel de fabrication. Composé de 72 % d’huile, de soude et d’eau, il cuit dans des chaudrons plusieurs jours et c’est dans cette « cuite » que réside le secret des maîtres savonniers. Dernière étape avant le coulage de la pâte dans les mises, le relargage ou rinçage à l’eau salée pour neutraliser la soude. Pour être sûr qu’il n’en reste plus, on goûte le savon !

Eldorado in the French Amazon: Tale of a future catastrophe

French Guiana, one of the last virgin equatorial rainforests in the world, has become a devil’s playground: its earth is filled with gold. Gold-hunters are destroying the forest and use mercury, a highly toxic substance, to amalgamate the precious gold-dust. The rivers are contaminated by the process and are poisoning the Amerindian community that lives off of the fish that swim in them. The French authorities cannot control this jungle, which covers a territory as large as Portugal. Scientists announce that a health tragedy of Minimata-like proportions will strike by 2013.

Polyrhachis laboriosa, an amazing arboreal ant.

With a little chance one can catch a glimpse in the forests of the Congo Basin and in particular in the Biosphere Reserve of Dja (Cameroun), the very discreet ants Polyrhachis laboriosa. This evolved species, neither dominant and nor aggressive, because of its adaptation to the arboreal life sets up an attractive ecological group. A body which shimmers of silver reflections on her head and thorax while her nicely gilded abdomen gives a singular beauty to it. But a thorax with a looks like armour and four spines prompts the predatory to be on its guard. Excellent architect, it can defend its colony with fieriness whatever the size of the adversary.

Joueur du Dimanche et photographe, c’était suffisant pour avoir envie d’aller y voir de plus près ! La première fois c’était en Décembre 1994, mon fils Lucas est né la veille. Le sujet : le centre d’entraînement des trotteurs en banlieue parisienne. Me voilà donc ce mardi 13 arrivant au château de Grosbois, jour de grâce, le soleil d’hiver se lève, la brume enveloppe la terre, il fait froid, et surgissent des silhouettes fumantes à quatre pattes et deux roues ; même les yeux fermés les photos auraient été bonnes.
